Interesting discussion. In my take on the same study, I blogged that citizens can complement the coverage of the professionals. You can read my thoughts at http://susancormier.com/citizen-journalists-make-a-difference

Tim:

I blogged on this very subject recently at http://ronrosstoday.com/?p=249 in a blog titled, "Rescue Your Local Newspaper."

Two things need to happen: Citizen journalists need to contact newspapers and newspapers need to offer some kind of training. We're working with several newspapers to provide that training and membership in the National Association of Citizen Journalists provides the training to individual citizen journalists.

Also our new book, "Handbook for Citizen Journalists" was written specifically to help aspiring and active citizen journalists survive and prosper.

Dr. Ross --

Thanks for the note.

Given the study information that was presented in the Ars Technica piece (which is how I came to my "failed experiment" conclusion), what would you say citizen journalists need to do on the local level to make up for the loss of local newspapers? Can they fill the gap?

Tim

Your conclusion that the citizen journalism movement is a "failed experiment" is a bit premature.

I suppose that when the Wright brother's flying machine flew only a few yards, some wag standing nearby probably remarked, "Well, they did get off the ground, but in reality it was just a failed experiment."

We think the citizen journalism movement has just begun. That's why we wrote, "Handbook for Citizen Journalists" and why we formed the National Association of Citizen Journalists.

Tim,

My name is Mark Watanabe, I'm the owner of YakAngler.com. I have found your articles very helpful when explaining many of the basics of kayaking. Although we are not a whitewater kayaking website we are a kayaking website. I would love to share your articles with my community. Your thoughts?
